What is Ulcerative Colitis?
Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel condition that causes irritation in the large intestine, mostly in the last part of the large intestine or colon, and rectum. This chronic condition is aggravated by stress and can cause severe symptoms such as pain, diarrhea and bleeding.
Ulcerative Colitis Symptoms
Ulcerative colitis symptoms can vary between individuals. The most common symptoms are diarrhea and abdominal pain and bloating. The following is a list of symptoms associated with UC.
• Pain in the abdomen and cramping
• Diarrhea
• Blood in the stools
• Bloating and gas
• Inability to absorb and digest nutrients from food
• Weight loss
• Painful and inflamed joints
• Skin rashes
• Fatigue
Ulcerative Colitis Treatments
Thankfully we can treat Ulcerative colitis with much success naturally. The following is a list of natural treatments for UC.
1. Omega 3 fatty acids – high quality fish oil supplements are natural anti-inflammatories and help decrease inflammation in the digestive tract and rest of the body. The oils also act as natural lubricants for the stool, thereby minimizing irritation along the colon walls. To learn more about the best fish oil supplement, click here.
2. Probiotics- individuals with UC have been found to be deficient in probiotics, or friendly flora. High potency probiotics like VitaTree Probiotics are necessary to re-colonize the small and large intestine in individuals with UC. For more info on the benefits of probiotics click here.
3. Diet- People with UC or other inflammatory bowel conditions need to alter their diets to minimize the culprits that cause inflammation. I recommend minimizing red meats, alcohol, refined carbohydrates and dairy products. Coffee can also be too harsh for chronic and acute inflammatory bowel diseases and should be avoided.
4. Stress reduction- I’ve not yet met a person with UC who didn’t have serious stress issues and an imbalanced approach to relieving stress and anxiety. I find these individuals “swallow” their emotions and have difficulty speaking up for themselves. Stress reduction is essential as well as learning techniques to express themselves appropriately. Natural stress formulas are available. Supplements for people with UC should always be whole food supplements, as conventional synthetic vitamins and minerals can be very harsh on the digestive tract. For more info on whole food supplements for stress and sleep, click here.
5. Marshmallow tea – this can be purchased at the health food store and drink 1 cup, three times a day, on an empty stomach.

Chronic and interstitial cystitis are inflammatory conditions in the urinary bladder that cause symptoms such as painful urination, difficulty with urination, nocturia (having to urinate at nighttime), frequent urination and pelvic pain. This condition affects millions of women worldwide and is often mistreated by conventional medicine.

Naturopathic medicine and specific supplements can bring the body back into balance so that the kidneys, urinary bladder and surrounding tissues function normally again. For the full article on how to treat chronic and interstitial cystitis naturally, click here.

Natural Treatments for Adult ADHD and Children’s ADHD

Jun 15th, 2012 Posted in alternative medicine, Detoxification, health, Nutrition, Uncategorized, vitamins, weight loss, Whole food vitamins, women's health | Comments Off on Natural Treatments for Adult ADHD and Children’s ADHD

Treating adult ADHD and children’s ADHD from a natural standpoint is virtually the same. ADHD is a condition that is often related to digestive issues and lack of some specific nutrients. The good news is that ADHD can be treated naturally with some simple dietary and nutritional changes.

Whether it is adult ADHD, or children’s ADHD, I always recommend starting to look at the diet first and foremost. The diet can often determine the severity of the symptoms of ADHD in both children and adults. The following is a list of foods and additives that should be avoided at all costs by people suffering with ADHD:

1. Sugar excess: Yes, we all need a little sugar in our diets, but excess sugar, especially refined white sugar is a culprit for causing changes in the mental-emotional sphere of health. Too much sugar can cause spikes in insulin that decrease the proper functioning of the brain. High insulin levels followed by a crash in blood sugar is also related to the hyperactivity component of ADHD. Also, sugar intake is closely related to yeast overgrowth, or candida. Candida is a very common problem in patients that I have treated with ADHD. The yeast overgrowth and candida organisms give off toxins that affect the brain’s ability to think clearly and cohesively. The best natural treatment for candida is high potency probiotics that are made for the human digestive tract and contain HMF. VitaTree Probiotics are high potency, live friendly flora and contain the important effective strain of friendly flora called HMF.

2. Food dyes and coloring: Artificial food coloring is another causative agent in the manifestation of symptoms of ADHD. Food dyes are synthetic chemicals that negatively alter the normal brain function of children and adults with ADHD. Avoid colored candies, juices, drinks, and chips that contain food dyes.

3. MSG or monosodium glutamate: This food flavour enhancer is toxic and affects both adults and children with ADHD. MSG is found in chips, soups, and a number of packaged foods and should be avoided completely by everyone.

Another thing to consider in both children and adults with ADHD is the very important brain chemical DHA. DHA is a naturally occurring essential fatty acid or omega 3 fat that is found in cold water fish. Most of us do not consume enough fish, and DHA. I don’t even recommend that people eat fish anymore because our waterways and hence the fish have become very toxic with PCB’s, dioxins and heavy metals such as mercury. DHA can be supplemented in high doses in high quality fish oil supplements and this is the best way to get preformed DHA. The best fish oil is VitaFish Oil from VitaTree Nutritionals, high in DHA, non-toxic and great for children and adults because it tastes like orange candy! No fishy taste or aftertaste. Natural Cures for Beer Gut

If you, or someone you love is suffering with a big beer belly or gut, you need to read this information and make changes immediately. A large, chronically distended abdomen is very common, yet not normal. It is a tell-tale sign and symptom of dysbiosis in the gut. Dysbiosis is an imbalance between good and bad gut bacteria in the small and large intestine. This happens over time from eating foods that perpetuate these bad bacteria and yeasts in the intestines, one of the main culprits is beer! This is because, beer and other alcoholic beverages are high in sugar, yeast and are fermented. A triple whammy for encouraging the growth of the bad organisms, especially candida and yeast.

This causes gas, bloating and the chronic distended abdomen. The cure?- modifying the diet to limit sweet, starchy, fermented and yeasty foods, plus the addition of probiotics, or good microorganisms to fix the imbalance between harmful bacteria, yeast and candida and to create a more healthy gut function and immune system.

Probiotics must be human compatible organisms, with high potency.

Another helpful protocol for a large belly is detoxification. VitaDetox helps cleanse all the internal organs, including the digestive tract in a gentle, yet effective manner. It is an easy to swallow, vegetarian capsule. You need not change your diet when doing the VitaDetox, however, if you choose to, VitaTree will give you a list of foods to avoid or limit during the cleanse. This is totally your choice, but can have a quicker impact on weight loss if you do avoid these foods. For more info visit www.tryvitatree.com.

Autism and Gut Health- Is There a Link?

Dec 16th, 2011 Posted in alternative medicine, health, Nutrition, Uncategorized, vitamins, Whole food vitamins | Comments Off on Autism and Gut Health- Is There a Link?

Yesterday I watched The Nature of Things show on CBC and was fascinated by the content in the show and how mainstream scientists and doctors are learning about the link between gut health and the onset of autism. I was moved by a mother’s story about her son’s developmental regression after too many rounds of anti-biotics and how he became autistic because of it.

These are known facts in naturopathic medicine. The question is how do we help these families and the children who suffer with autistic symptoms. I have had success with using omega 3 fatty acids and human microflora probiotics. The VitaFish Oil, high in DHA is an important fatty acid that seems to be deficient in children with autism, ADD and ADHD. We see marked improvements in behaviors and learning with the addition of this important nutrient. Also, human strain probiotics like VitaTree Probiotics provide the essential good friendly flora for the child’s GI tract and immune system. When you supply enough good probiotics to the gut, it helps stave off the bad bacteria that can cause a release of neurotoxins, worsening the symptoms of autism, as seen in the program on CBC.

Another factor is heavy metal toxicity in the brains of children with autism, also linked to vaccines.

IBS- A Probiotic Problem

Nov 24th, 2011 Posted in alternative medicine, cancer, Digestive blogs, health | Comments Off on IBS- A Probiotic Problem

Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a common complaint among men and women. It is often associated with a lack of enough good probiotics, or friendly live microorganisms in the intestines. We all have over 400 species of bacteria in the intestines, some are bad, most should be good. Unfortunately, people who suffer with IBS, often lack enough of the good guys to ward off the bad intestinal bacteria. It is essential to supplement with Probiotics daily to revert the balance in favour of the friendly flora, or probiotics. This not only helps digestion, but also helps the immune system to function optimally.

Probiotics come in a number of different strains and sources. Be certain the probiotics you are taking are labelled for Humans! Many are not! For more info visit www.tryvitatree.com.

American Teens Will Die Younger of Cardiovascular Disease

Nov 18th, 2011 Posted in alternative medicine, health, Uncategorized, vitamins | Comments Off on American Teens Will Die Younger of Cardiovascular Disease

A new study has found that American teens are at a higher risk of premature death due to cardiovascular disease, as compared to adults. The alarming statistics show that American teens aged 12-19 were overweight, had high blood sugar levels, were not eating enough fruits and vegetables and did not exercise.

I’m not surprised. When I think of my childhood, we were very active, and junk food was not as prevalent in the daily diet. Now it seems kids are addicted to all the wrong foods, and often the junk foods can be less expensive than the healthy, raw fruits and vegetables.

Parents need to be diligent in enforcing proper eating habits and exercise daily! Proper supplementation to the diet of the essential nutrients like DHA from cold water fish for brain function, and anti-oxidants from high ORAC value fruits and vegetables is a must. Probiotics are also essential for a healthy immune system and digestive tract. For more info on whole food vitamins, see the DAILY ESSENTIALS from VitaTree Nutritionals at www.tryvitatree.com.

Flu Vaccine- Studies show not that effective!

Oct 27th, 2011 Posted in health, Uncategorized, vitamins | Comments Off on Flu Vaccine- Studies show not that effective!

It was all over mainstream media yesterday that the effectiveness of the flu shot is in question. The Lancet, a well respected medical jounal published a study that found that Flu vaccines only prevent the flu in 1.5 out of every 100 adults injected with the vaccine!

The media made out the same study to say that the flu vaccine is effective in only 60% of the population that receive the shot. In reality, only a small percentage of people, who did not even get the shot, in the study, even got the flu (2.7%).

The flu, in most cases is not life-threatening in health adults and can actually strengthen the immune system. Yes, you did read that right, it can actually make you more healthy. The flu stimulates the immune reaction, waking up your immune system and often cleans out the emunctories, or detox organs like the lungs, liver, kidneys, bowels and lymphatics. It is best to get a fever during a flu, indicating that your immune system is working efficiently. If you do not get a fever, it is a good sign that you may be toxic and need to do some detoxification. Also, an inadequate amount of good bacteria in the body, or probiotics, can lead to an insufficient immune system and susceptibility to colds and flues.

C. Difficile- Natural Cures

Jul 24th, 2011 Posted in Uncategorized | Comments Off on C. Difficile- Natural Cures

I have had great success treating C. Difficile infections in my patients with Human Microflora probiotics. These are special strains of good gut bacteria that are made for the human digestive tract. They are the friendly flora that help colonize the small and large intestine with an army of protective organisms that help to prevent the bad ones, C. Difficile being one of the worst, from attaching and colonizing. I’ve seen my patients recover from this potentially life-threatening infection in less than 2 weeks on a high dose of the Human Microflora Probiotics from VitaTree. Beware of other probiotics that may not be the right strain. Often probiotics supplements and those found in yogurt are from cow bacteria, not designed for the human digestive tract.
