Varicose veins affect women much more frequently than men and can be a very ugly and painful condition. Besides surgery and injections, conventional medicine does not have much to offer the treatment of varicose veins. Thankfully, naturopathic medicine offers many alternative treatments for the prevention and treatment of this condition.

What causes varicose veins?

Being overweight, hormonal changes and insufficient circulation due to lack of exercise can all be causative factors in the development of varicose veins.

Natural Treatments for Varicose Veins

1.Flavonoids from fruits and vegetables are helpful at decreasing the incidence of varicose veins. Dark pigmented fruits are high in flavonoids. Bilberry, blackberries, cherries , prunes, blueberries and cranberries and are all high in flavonoids. VitaFruits and VitaVeggies from VitaTree Nutritionals contain these important flavonoids, a great natural treatment for varicose veins. Click here for more info on VitaFruits and VitaVeggies, whole food vitamins.
2.Weight loss is usually mandatory for men and women who suffer from varicose veins. Green tea is an effective fat burner, and also contains phytochemicals that can increase the tone of blood vessels. Green tea is the key ingredient in the effective weight loss supplement, VitaTree Fat Burner. For more info see VitaTree Fat Burner, click here.

3. Regular exercise that involves the legs. Jogging, walking, cycling and swimming are great exercises that involve the legs and help to keep the circulation going, thus helpful in the treatment and prevention of varicose veins.

Varicose veins can be treated naturally and prevented by using various alternative medicine protocols. Remember that any supplement you consider taking should always be a whole food vitamin, made directly from nature’s finest nutrients. For more info on the best whole food vitamins, visit

Water Retention Remedies

Jun 29th, 2012 Posted in alternative medicine, Detoxification, health, Nutrition, Uncategorized, vitamins, weight loss, Whole food vitamins, women's health | Comments Off on Water Retention Remedies

Water retention can be a common problem, especially for women. Some women can gain from 2 to 8 pounds just in water retention at different times during their hormonal cycles. Water retention symptoms include swelling of the legs, abdomen, face, hands and overall body.

What causes water retention? The causes of water retention include hormonal changes, such as estrogen in excess of progesterone, dehydration or too much water, kidney deficiencies, lung and heart disease, pharmaceutical drugs, low protein diet, excessive salt intake, pregnancy, toxicity, lack of exercise and stress.

Thankfully there are a number of natural water retention remedies. It is important to have your health evaluated by a qualified practitioner, such as a medical practioner and a naturopathic doctor to determine that there is not a serious underlying disease. The following are some natural water retention remedies that may help to eliminate unwanted excess water weight that may be weighing you down.

1. Drink sufficient, but not too much water. Drink about 1 L per day of good quality water, that is preferable alkaline. (for more info on alkalinity read my book The Healthy Millionaire.) If you exercise heavily, you may need more water than this, but beware, if you drink too much, it can cause water retention.

2. Balance your hormones. For women, too much estrogen as compared to progesterone levels, can be a cause for bloating and weight gain. VitaWomen’s Formula from VitaTree Nutritionals, helps to balance estrogen levels naturally, with no synthetic hormones and protects from harmful estrogens in the environment. For more info visit

3. Exercise- Exercise helps to move the lymph and toxins in the body. It is also a great idea to detoxify the body, at least 4 times per year, at the change of each season. See my Detox formula called VitaDetox, at VitaDetox contains some gentle diuretics that help to rid the body of excess fluids and water retention.

4. Ensure that you eat sufficient protein everyday. Protein helps to keep water in the cells and prevents it from leaking outside the cells causing swelling and edema. Good sources of proteins include eggs, chicken, beans, lentils, nuts and seeds. There are also some good vegetarian protein powders available on the market that help to supplement protein if you may be deficient.

In conclusion, no matter what causes water retention in your case, try to get to the bottom of it and treat it naturally.

Beauty Benefits of Vitamin D

Best Absorbed Vitamin D

Best Absorbed Vitamin D

Vitamin D3 is an essential nutrient that most people who live in temperate climates are deficient in due to the lack of sunshine and skin exposure to the sun’s rays. The sun’s UVB rays are responsible for creating vitamin D3 in our body, through the interaction with cholesterol. It is important to note that we require Vitamin D3 as a potent anti-oxidant and cancer preventative! Yes, that’s right, we need Vitamin D3 to prevent cancer, even though we’ve been taught through the media that the sun is harmful and causes skin cancer. I believe we should all get some healthy sun exposure, in the summer months to improve our Vitamin D levels. This means exposing our arms and legs to the sun, for at least 15 minutes, 4-6 days per week, between the hours of 10 am and 2 pm. If you live closer to the equator, you naturally have more exposure to the sun than someone like me, who lives in Canada and has many cold winter months, without sunshine. If you are able to travel to a warmer climate in the winter months to get some natural sun exposure, this is fantastic.
The beauty benefits of Vitamin D3 are surprising. Vitamin D3 helps improve skin tone and texture, “Having sufficient vitamin D in the skin helps minimize acne, boost elasticity, stimulates collagen production, enhances radiance, and lessen lines and the appearance of dark spots, he says.” Dr. Dennis Gross, board certified NYC dermatologist.
Recent medical news has shown that Vitamin D3 is best produced and absorbed into the skin after 48 hours post sun exposure. It is recommended that once you have had your sunbathing session, you should avoid washing your skin with soap for the next 2 days as this will wash away much of the Vitamin D3 your body has produced in the sebum of your skin cells. I would suggest you not wash your arms and legs perhaps, but do wash your other parts with soap, to avoid body odor and bacterial multiplication.
For those people who simply cannot get enough sunshine, I recommend a Vitamin D3 supplement, like VitaTree Vitamin D3. This unique formulation of Vitamin D3 is made from lanolin, the oil secreted by sheep’s wool. This is the next best way to get your Vitamin D, and in the right form being D3, cholecalciferol. Vitamin D2, ergocalciferol, is the Vitamin D supplemented in most food sources and has very little absorption as compared to D3.

Skin Health- Hyaluronic Acid is Essential

Feb 24th, 2012 Posted in alternative medicine, Detoxification, Digestive blogs, health, Nutrition, vitamins, weight loss, Whole food vitamins, women's health | Comments Off on Skin Health- Hyaluronic Acid is Essential

Hyaluronic acid is a glycosaminoglycan, or GAG that helps retain moisture beneath the skin surface, and helps adhere collagen and elastin. Hyaluronic acid depletes as we age, and sun exposure rapidly degrades it. Natural dietary changes can help maintain healthy hyaluronic acid levels, as well as some supplements.

Estrogen helps maintain hyaluronic acid. Supplements that balance hormones such as VitaWomen’s Formula can help maintain healthy estrogen levels, as well as skin elasticity due to hyaluronic acid.

Soy products also maintain estrogen levels and can also help maintain skin elasticity due to hyaluronic acid.

Magnesium is essential for hyaluronic acid production. Foods naturally high in magnesium include: nuts and seeds like almonds, sunflower and sesame seeds, brazil nuts, cocoa, blackstrap molasses and soybeans.

Silica, an important mineral helps anchor in the GAG’s and hyaluronic acid in the skin. It is naturally occuring in the herb horsetail, and concentrated in the VitaTree Hair, Skin and Nails Formula.

3 Ways to Fight Fat!

The battle of the bulge is a constant focus for a number of women and men, who despite their best efforts, have difficulty losing that stubborn weight once and for all. Here are my three tips in terms of supplementation for effective weight loss.

1. Detoxification- helps to eliminate stored toxins from the fat cells. Once the toxins are released, the body no longer has to hold onto excess water and fat to dilute the toxins. See my formula VitaDetox for whole body detoxification, with or without dietary changes, it’s up to you!

2. Fibre- Fibre helps make you feel full, so you can end up eating less. Plus, fibre helps elimination through the bowel. See VitaMucil from VitaTree Nutritionals. High fibre capsules that are easy to swallow with no mixing needed!

3. Calcium and Vitamin D3- Studies show that a calcium and D3 deficiency leads to weight gain and the ability to lose weight is hampered. Calcium should be a whole food calcium, not a tablet or capsule that are usually laded with fillers, binding agents and flow agents. See my Whole Food Coral Calcium.

HPV shot now approved for boys!

Nov 2nd, 2011 Posted in Alternative cancer treatments, health, Uncategorized | Comments Off on HPV shot now approved for boys!

In the US last week, an advisory panel to the US Centers for Disease Control recommended that all 11 to 12 year olds – boys as well as girls – be routinely vaccinated against a family of HPV viruses. This controversial approach to the prevention of cancer caused by the HPV virus has parents questioning the validity of the statistics and the safety of the vaccine. There are certainly many negative consequences to vaccinations and widespread use of them as preventatives to cancer seems ridiculous to me. For a cancer to manifest, it needs a certain set of “conditions”. The terrain or individual grounds that we all have in order to either stave off cancer or allow it to grow is under our control. Proper diet, exercise, anti-oxidants from whole food sources and most importantly, a clear and healthy mind and spirit are more important to keep us healthy, even if we are exposed to one virus or another.

Early Onset Alzheimer’s Disease-Preventable?

Aug 25th, 2011 Posted in alternative medicine, Uncategorized, women's health | Comments Off on Early Onset Alzheimer’s Disease-Preventable?

In naturopathic circles, Alzheimer’s disease is a disease of toxicity, namely in the brain. As naturopathic doctors, we aim to get at the root cause of disease, and not just merely treat the symptoms or put a bandaid on the symptoms to cover them up. I saw yesterday on CNN, a shocking story about legendary Tennessee women’s basketball coach Pat Summitt and her diagnosis of early onset Alzheimer’s.
This type of disease is a terrible diagnosis, but even more shocking and devastating when it hits men and women earlier in life. I can only hope that Ms. Summitt’s treatment will include looking into the toxicity of the disease, how and why it affected her, and most importantly, how to detoxify her system and support her brain with the ever so important DHA, one of the key nutrients in VitaFish Oil.

Be Sure to Take the Right Vitamin D

When choosing a Vitamin D supplement, be sure it is the best source, from sheeps lanolin. This source of Vitamin D is natural and in the form of D3, the best utilized by the body. Vitamin D should also be suspended in oil for best absorption as it is a fat-soluble vitamin. Watch out for Vitamin D tablets that are full of synthetic fillers. For the best Vitamin D3 visit
